Why Eat at Osteria Tavola Magna in Campo de' Fiori

Rome has thousands of restaurants, and Campo de' Fiori alone is ringed with tables from morning to midnight. So why sit down at Osteria Tavola Magna? Because we set out to be the kind of place Romans themselves call an osteria: a relaxed room on the square, a menu built on the city's own recipes, and a kitchen that cooks each plate when you order it. Here is what you can expect when you join us at Campo de' Fiori 34/36.

A table on Rome's liveliest square

We are right on Campo de' Fiori, one of the few piazzas in the historic centre that is busy at every hour. In the morning the market stalls fill the square with fruit, vegetables and flowers; at lunch it is the meeting point between Piazza Navona and the Tiber; in the evening it becomes one of the city's favourite places to meet friends. Eating here means you are a short walk from Piazza Navona, the Pantheon, Palazzo Farnese and the bridges to Trastevere, so lunch or dinner with us fits naturally into a day of sightseeing.

Roman cooking, the way it is meant to be

Our menu is built around the dishes Rome is famous for. The four great Roman pastas are all there: carbonara, cacio e pepe, amatriciana and gricia, made with cured pork jowl (guanciale) and pecorino cheese as they should be. Next to them you will find Roman classics such as saltimbocca alla romana, coda alla vaccinara (the slow-cooked oxtail stew of the old Testaccio slaughterhouse district) and, when in season, carciofi alla romana and carciofi alla giudia, the two Roman ways with artichokes. We keep these recipes traditional and simple, because that is what makes them good.

Fresh pasta, fish and pizza too

Not everyone at the table wants the same thing, and an osteria should welcome everyone. Our handmade egg pasta section includes tonnarelli, fettuccine, gnocchi and baked lasagne. From the sea there are spaghetti with clams, grilled or baked sea bass and sea bream, Sicilian-style swordfish and grilled lobster. And for those who simply want a pizza, we make both pizze rosse (with tomato) and pizze bianche (without), from a classic margherita to our house pizza with mortadella and stracciata cheese.

Open all day, every day

Travel plans rarely follow restaurant hours, so we keep ours generous: we are open every day from 9:00 in the morning until 2:00 at night. Stop by after a morning at the market, for a long lunch, an early dinner before a concert or a late plate of pasta after an evening walk. The kitchen follows the rhythm of the square, and you will not be rushed.

Homemade desserts to finish

A Roman meal is not over until the dessert and the coffee. Our desserts are made in house: a creamy tiramisù, panna cotta with berries or chocolate, cheesecake and crème brûlée, plus the dessert of the day. If you prefer something lighter, a lemon sorbet or an affogato (ice cream "drowned" in espresso or liqueur) is the perfect close.
